Outline planning applications require the Company to deliver public space in accordance with the Council’s requirement for 20%. This should not be confused with the Council’s requirement to provide private amenity space within developments, particularly residential developments.
At the moment the green space or “common parts” are quite modest but they will in time create the network of green space that the Llewelyn-Davies masterplan envisaged and these will be maintained for the benefit of the new waterfront community as well as the surrounding community by Waterfront Edinburgh Management Ltd until complete.
Saltire Square
This is the main public space on Waterfront Avenue. Built in 2004, it includes the Vincent Butler Sculpture 'Going to the Beach' which stands in a reflecting pond.
The square is intended to act as a local transport interchange for local residents, people working in the area and visitors. The tram (line 1B) is scheduled to stop here.
The Walk
This pedestrian and cycle path connects West Granton Road with the shore. It crosses Waterfront Avenue at Saltire Square, prodiving North/South links between the exisiting community, the newly developed area and the Water. Lanscaping work is currently taking place on the South park of the Walk which is due to open in late 2008.
The Promenade
A public promenade is planned and will run along the waters edge, eventually connecting Cramond to Portobello.
