Working with our neighbours

By Telford College : 25 Apr 2008

HNC Marketing Student, Kalina Haralampieva is currently working on placement with one of our neighbours, Waterfront Edinburgh as a Marketing Assistant.  Communications Manager, Jane Dennyson from Waterfront Edinburgh approached the Marketing team to see if a possible student placement could be arranged.  Jane then came and made a presentation to the group of HNC Marketing students about Waterfront Edinburgh and in turn the students had to apply for a Marketing Assistant placement on offer.  Successful applicants were then invited to attend an interview, after which Kalina was appointed the position.

The paid placement includes three full days per week for six months.  Kalina continues to attend College two days per week until she completes her course in June.  Kalina has been in position for almost three months now, she said: “It’s been going really well, I have been involved in developing the new website, producing flyers and promotional materials and working on building a PR contact list.  I am sure the placement will be good for my CV, which should enable me to progress in a career in marketing”

This is not the only involvement Waterfront Edinburgh has with students at Telford.  Jane is currently working with photography students and has also set design students a competition to design a new logo which will see the winner announced at the end of year design show on 12th June and be awarded with a £500 digital camera and a week’s placement at Design Works agency. Jane commented, “The staff at the College are always really helpful and willing to take projects forward so we can both benefit.  We are looking into the next project at the moment to allow construction students to practice their skills in locations on the waterfront.”

Kalina hopes to complete the placement and go on to accept one of the places she has been offered at Herriott Watt and Napier University to study for her HND in Marketing and possibly continue onto the Degree course.  Kalina continues: “Studying at Telford has been a great experience.  I am from Bulgaria where the education system is very different.  You learn more practical elements here that are more relevant to the job.  All the Tutors have been really helpful, you never feel lost, it’s like being part of a family”.
