Regeneration company aims to walk on water

By SBC, Caryn Robertson : 30 May 2008

Waterfront Edinburgh was created as a catalyst to regenerate Granton waterfront.  IT is one of the largest urban regeneration projects in Scotland, leading the revival of 345 acres of land to reconnect Scotland’s capital with its waterfront.  As a joint venture between The City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Enterprise, it owns 120 acres of land at Granton including 1.3km of waterfront. Over the next 15 years, this land will be transformed into a new community with high quality residential, leisure, cultural and commercial developments.

Chief Executive Colin Hunter said: “Our main objective is regeneration of the area.
To achieve that we have to be commercially sustainable and ensure economic
development. We have clear vision of how we will transform this part of the city into a
thriving and sustainable area, fully integrated with the existing community.

“Everything we do has to be sustainable right from the planning stages. Whether it has
got an environmental or a community slant it needs to be sustainable – and we need to
think about these things now.”

For the past six months Waterfront Edinburgh has been working closely with Scottish
Business in the Community to draw up its first detailed Corporate Social Responsibility
strategy. This will ensure all aspects of its work fits with and informs the company’s
wider objectives – meaning everything from sponsorship of local groups to decontamination of land has to be considered as part of a bigger picture.

Waterfront Edinburgh recently published a detailed Environment Policy highlighting five areas where it can lead and influence change and improvement. It is published at  www.waterfront-ed.com. They were also among over 100 Scottish businesses to pledge action at the 2008 HRH The Prince of Wales’s May Day Business Summit on Climate Change.
